Mimosa hostilis - Exotic rarity from South America 🌿✨

Mimosa hostilisalso known as Jurema or Jurema preta, is a tropical plant from the legume family (Fabaceae). Originally native to Brazil, Mexico and other parts of Latin America, it grows as a shrub-like tree with feathery, filigree leaves and delicate, white to cream-colored flower spikes. Its fascinating appearance makes it a sought-after rarity for collectors of exotic plants.

Sowing instructions 🌱

  • Sowing time: Possible all year round in the house.
  • Germination period: 7-21 days at 22-28 °C.
  • Seeding depth: Place the seeds 0.5-1 cm deep in the soil.
  • Substrate: Loose, sandy and well-drained.
  • Location: Bright, sunny and warm; ideal in a greenhouse or conservatory.
  • Pouring: Regularly, but moderately; avoid waterlogging.
  • Planting distance: For outdoor cultivation, keep at least 1.5-2 m away, as the plant can grow like a tree.

Note: Before sowing, we recommend briefly scarifying the hard seed coat to speed up germination.

Harvesting, use & storage 🌸

can grow up to 4-6 m high in tropical and subtropical regions. Its white flowers usually appear in spring and attract numerous insects. In Europe, it is primarily an ethnobotanical ornamental plant. Parts of the plant can be preserved by drying and stored in tightly sealed containers. In its region of origin, the plant is traditionally used in a variety of ways, but here it is primarily used as a collector's item and botanical specialty.

Tips & tricks for hobby gardeners 🌿

  • Pot culture: In Central Europe it is best kept in a pot or tub as it is not frost hardy.
  • Overwintering: Overwinter in a bright, frost-free place at at least 12-15 °C.
  • Pruning: Tolerates pruning very well; therefore compact growth possible.
  • Fertilization: Apply organic fertilizer sparingly during the growing season.
  • Combination: Ideal in exotic collections with tropical plants such as Coffea, Piper or Citrus.

Worth knowing ✨

Mimosa hostilis is deeply rooted in the cultural history of Latin America. In Brazil in particular, it has been traditionally used and revered for centuries. Its name "hostilis" refers to its resilience and robustness.
Ecologically, it plays an important role: as a legume, it binds nitrogen in the soil and thus improves soil quality. At the same time, it serves as a food source and habitat for insects and small animals. In Europe today, it is mainly used as an ethnobotanical rarity, collector's plant and decorative ornamental.
