Sowing instructions

Would you like to grow Taraxacum officinale, also known as dandelion, in your garden or on your balcony? Dandelion is an easy-care plant that grows almost anywhere. You can sow the seeds directly outdoors. Sowing is best done in spring or fall. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location and prepare the soil well. It should be nutrient-rich and loose so that the seeds germinate optimally. Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep and keep a distance of 20 cm between the plants. Make sure to cover the seeds lightly with soil and keep the soil well moist until germination begins after around 10-14 days.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the first young leaves after just a few weeks. Dandelion leaves are very versatile: Whether fresh in a salad, steamed as a side dish or as an ingredient for green smoothies - the leaves are not only delicious, but also full of vitamins. The flowers can be collected and made into syrup or jelly. The roots are ideal for tea or as a coffee substitute. It is best to store the harvested leaves in the fridge to keep them fresh. You can store the dried roots and flowers in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Tips & Tricks

Dandelions will grow almost anywhere, but are particularly productive if you water them regularly and give them some compost from time to time. To extend the harvest period, you can cut the plants back after the first flowering, which encourages new growth. If you plan to use the roots, wait until fall to harvest them - this is when they are particularly rich in nutrients.

Worth knowing

Dandelion is not only a wild plant, but also a medicinal plant with a long tradition. The plant contains valuable ingredients such as bitter substances that promote digestion. In folk medicine, dandelion is often used to support liver function and detoxification. The plant is also a valuable source of food for bees and other pollinators.
