Sinicuichi (Heimia salicifolia), Seed

Origin: Austria
Harvest: October 2023
Germination period: approx. 3-5 weeks

You can choose between 100 and 200 seeds.

Growing instructions:

These tiny seeds are light germinators, which is why they must not be covered with growing medium for germination.

Then fill the seedling pots with a loose seedling soil mixture (fine grain size), spray with water, place the seeds on the soil and cover only thinly with substrate. It is best to cover the seed pots with plastic foil and air them daily or keep the soil moist. The pots can also be placed in suitable propagators until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are a few centimetres tall. It is important to ensure a supply of fresh air at least once a day to prevent and avoid mold.
The seeds need a lot of light and sufficient heat for germination, because they will not germinate

After germination of seeds seedlings can be very slowly accustomed to the drier indoor air or fresh air outdoors after a few weeks.

Requires outdoors a sunny location and a well water-draining substrate or soil in which it is planted. If young plants are cultivated outdoors, they should nevertheless be somewhat protected - especially from wind and rain. If necessary, cultivation in a greenhouse with sufficient sunlight is recommended.

Things to know about Sinicuichi:

Gordon Wasson associated Sinicuichi with the Aztec god of spring and desire Xochipilli. Floral elements that appear on the legendary Aztec statue of Xochipilli have always been considered the flora of Sinicuiche. Although there is no documented evidence of its ritual use, anecdotal evidence shows that the herb was used in fertility ceremonies, as well as in spiritual purification rituals that were said to rid one of evil and ward off dark spirits (Wasson 1974).

The well-known name Sinicuiche is used for both the plant and the drink that is made from it. The plant is also known by popular names such as Anchinol, Chapuzina, Escoba del Rio, Flor de San Francisco, Granadillo, Hanchinoli, Hierba de San Francisco, Jara, Quiebra Yugo and Xonoxhilli, among many others. In relation to the drink, the name Sinicuiche refers to the Mexican "magical drink that causes oblivion", immortalized by the German supernatural author Hanns Heinz Ewers in his volume The Blue Indian (Graham 1997).
