Rhubarb ‚Victoria‘ (Rheum rhabarbarum) – Seeds
Rheum rhabarbarum „Victoria“ is a traditional rhubarb variety. The Royal Horticultural Society describes it as a late-season, popular heirloom variety with very sturdy stalks and a reddish hue.
🌿 Product & Interesting Facts
„Victoria“ Rhubarb“ It is one of the classic rhubarb varieties that have been cultivated for a long time. It is characterized by sturdy leaf stalks; the RHS describes „Victoria“ as a late-season variety with cardinal-red stalks, reddish-green flesh, and particularly thick stalks.
Rhubarb is a perennial plant that sprouts anew each spring from a vigorous root crown. It thrives in sunny to partially shaded locations with deep, nutrient-rich soil that is sufficiently moist but not waterlogged.
Growing from seed results in genetic variation. As a result, individual seedlings may differ in stem color, vigor, and yield—an important distinction from vegetative propagation from a true-to-type mother plant.
Cultivation & care
Soak the seeds
The seeds can be soaked in water for several hours before sowing. This isn't necessary, but it ensures that the seeds are evenly moistened.
Sowing
Sow the seeds in loose growing medium and cover them lightly with the medium. Then moisten them evenly.
Let them sprout in a warm place
For the germination phase, choose a bright, moderately warm location and keep the growing medium evenly moist.
Thin the seedlings
Once several true leaves have developed, carefully transplant the sturdy seedlings into individual pots.
Further Culture
Grow young plants in nutrient-rich soil that is kept bright and evenly moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Planting out
Plant well-developed plants with sufficient spacing in their final location. Rhubarb grows large and remains in the same spot for many years.
🔎 Special Feature
„Victoria“ plants grown from seed may differ from the typical variety. The RHS explicitly points out that seedlings of named rhubarb varieties are more variable than plants propagated vegetatively by division.
💡 GardenShaman Tip
In the first year, focus on allowing the plants to develop a strong root system. For young rhubarb plants, establishing a healthy crown and root system is more important than growing as quickly as possible.
