Sowing instructions
The seeds of Hylocereus undatus "Amarillo", also known as yellow dragon fruit cactus, are relatively easy to handle and offer you the opportunity to grow a tropical plant in your garden or greenhouse. The ideal time for sowing is spring, when temperatures are consistently between 20-30°C. You should place the seeds on the surface of moist, well-drained substrate and press them down lightly without covering them. Make sure that the substrate remains moist at all times, but not too wet to avoid mold growth. Germination usually takes place within 1-3 weeks. You can sow the seeds in small pots or seed trays and place them in a warm, sunny location to ensure optimal conditions.
Harvest, use & storage
Harvest your dragon fruit when the fruits have reached a bright yellow color and can be easily detached from the stem. It usually takes 2-3 years for the Hylocereus undatus "Amarillo" to bear fruit for the first time. The fruit has a sweet, slightly sour aroma and can be eaten fresh or processed into juices, smoothies and desserts. The flesh is also ideal for adding to yogurt or as an ingredient in salads. The dragon fruit can be stored in a cool place to preserve its freshness, or you can also freeze the flesh to keep it for longer.
Tips and tricks
To ensure that your dragon fruit plant grows healthily, you should make sure that it gets enough sunlight. It grows best in a bright location where it receives several hours of sunlight a day. Regular watering is important, but avoid waterlogging as this can lead to root rot. You can also raise the plant on a climbing support or trellis, as it is a climbing plant. Make sure that the soil is well-drained and regularly supplied with nutrients so that your plant grows vigorously and bears plenty of fruit.
Worth knowing
Hylocereus undatus "Amarilla" is one of the few cactus species that bears edible fruit. The plant belongs to the Cactaceae family and is originally from Central America. It is particularly well known for its bright yellow, scaly fruits and sweet flesh. Dragon fruits are not only delicious, but also extremely healthy as they are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The plant is also easy to care for and requires little attention once it is well established.
