The Real tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a fast-growing, perennial plantwhich is often grown as an annual. It impresses with its large, soft leaves and delicate, pink to purple flowers that exude a pleasant fragrance. Originally from South America, tobacco is traditionally grown for various purposes, but is also an excellent Ornamental plant for the garden.

Sowing instructions

• Sowing time: Spring to early summer (March-June)

• Germination period: 7-14 days at 20-25 °C

• Seeding depth: Light germinator - Sprinkle seeds only on the soil and press down lightly

• Location: Sunny, warm, sheltered from the wind

• Floor: Permeable, nutrient-rich, slightly moist

• Pouring: Regularly, but avoid waterlogging

• Planting distance: 40-60 cm between the plants

Harvest, use & storage

• Flowering time: June to September

• Height: 1,5-2 m

• Leaves: Traditionally dried after the harvest

• Storage: Store seeds in a dry, cool and dark place

Tips and tricks

• For earlier flowering, the Sowing indoors from February.

• A sheltered location prevents the tall plants from kinking.

• The plant is sensitive to frost - only after the Ice Saints have passed.

• Visited by bees and butterfliestherefore also suitable for natural gardens.

• The leaves are Sticky by nature - This is normal and not a sign of pest infestation.

Worth knowing

Nicotiana tabacum is the most important species for commercial tobacco production, but differs from Nicotiana rusticawhich has a higher nicotine content. Historically, the plant was cultivated in South America and later worldwide. It contains Nicotinoidswhich are naturally effective against pests, which is why it was also used as a biological pesticide in the past.
