Sowing instructions
- Choose the right location: Perilla plants thrive best in sunny to semi-shady locations with well-drained soil. Make sure that the location is protected from strong winds and offers enough space, as the plant can develop into a bushy shrub.
- Soil preparation: Loosen the soil thoroughly and remove weeds and large stones. Red shiso thrives best in humus-rich, well-drained soil. If necessary, add organic materials to improve the soil structure.
- Sowing time: The best time to sow red shiso seeds is in spring, after there is no longer any risk of frost. Sow the seeds about 0.5 to 1 centimeter deep in the prepared soil and keep it evenly moist.
Tips and tricks
- Regular watering: Perilla plants need regular watering during the growing season to stay healthy. Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot.
- Mulching: Mulch the soil around the perilla plants with organic materials such as straw or compost to retain moisture, suppress weed growth and improve soil structure.
- Harvest time: The leaves of red shiso can be harvested after around 60 to 70 days. Cut the leaves regularly to promote the growth of new leaves and harvest them in the morning when the flavor is most intense.
