Growing instructions:

These seeds are dark germinators, which is why they should be planted approx. 1-2 cm deep in growing medium for germination. Pre-soaking in water for 24-48 hours has proven to be beneficial.

Then fill the seedling pots with a loose seedling soil mixture, spray with water, place the seeds on the soil and cover with a 1-2 cm thick layer of soil. It is best to cover the seed pots with plastic foil and aerate them daily or keep the soil moist. The pots can also be placed in suitable propagators until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are a few centimetres tall. It is important to ensure a supply of fresh air at least once a day to prevent and avoid mold.

After germination of seeds seedlings can be slowly accustomed to the drier indoor air or fresh air outdoors after a few weeks.

Requires a sunny outdoor location and a well water-draining substrate or soil in which it is planted. Regular fertilization is particularly important during the summer months!

Interesting facts about Ricinus Communis:

Ricinus communis propagates by seed, with the plants maturing in the first season. They can thrive and flower all year round in a frost-free environment. The plant can produce abundant seed. Seeds can be dispersed by rodents and birds, on mud on boots, on vehicles and machinery, and by floodwaters. It is also dispersed by a "blasting mechanism" (at the local level) when the capsule dries out and splits. Larger plants can drop their seeds up to 5 meters from the mother plant.

Ricinin, which can be extracted from the seeds of castor oil, is highly toxic and has often been used in murder cases. Castor oil is better suited as a soap and as a carrier, emollient or solvent for toiletries and cosmetics and is used to cleanse and care for the skin. The plant has medicinal properties. It is gaining popularity as a biodiesel crop.

Castor bean seeds are rich in oleic acid, ricinoleic acid, linoleic acid and various fatty acids. All these three acids are extremely helpful in the treatment of gout and rheumatism. The oil extracted from these seeds has a quick penetrating power. When you apply castor oil to the affected areas, you get immediate relief. Often castor oil is mixed with other herbs and essential oils with medicinal properties to enhance the effect and improve the result. Regular use is very important for long-lasting results.
