Sowing instructions
If you want to grow Humulus lupulus, also known as hops, yourself, it all starts with sowing. It is best to sow the seeds in spring as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Use nutrient-rich, well-drained soil and press the seeds lightly into the surface without covering them completely. Make sure you keep the seeds moist regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Germination may require some patience, so you should wait at least two to three weeks before the first shoots appear.
Harvest, use & storage
The harvest time for hops usually begins in late summer, when the cones are plump and aromatic. Carefully cut off the cones and leave them to dry in an airy, dry place. Dried hops are ideal for making beer, herbal teas or as a soothing sleeping pillow. Store the dried cones in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve the aroma and potency.
Tips & Tricks
Hops are a climbing plant and therefore need a stable climbing support. Plant it in a sunny to semi-shady location so that it grows vigorously. Regular watering and occasional fertilizer applications promote growth and flower formation. Make sure to cut the hops back in winter to make room for new shoots the following year.
Worth knowing
Humulus lupulus is not only valuable for beer production, but is also a medicinal plant with calming and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, hops are a perennial plant that grows reliably over many years and always produces rich harvests.
