Sowing instructions

To ensure that your Cucurbita pepo plants thrive optimally, you should start sowing in April. Use small pots or seed trays and sow the seeds about 2 cm deep in the soil. Make sure that you use nutrient-rich and well-drained soil. The ideal germination temperature is around 20-22 °C. Place the containers in a bright place and keep the soil slightly moist at all times. After the Ice Saints, when there is no longer any danger of frost, you can plant the plants outdoors. Make sure they are planted about 1 meter apart, as the pumpkin plants need a lot of space to spread out.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest your first pumpkins after approx. 12-16 weeks. Make sure to cut the fruits before they are fully ripe, as this guarantees a particularly fresh taste. The "orange" summer squash is perfect for summer dishes such as grilled vegetables, soups or as a side dish. Pumpkins that you want to keep for longer should be stored fully ripe and in a cool place - this way they will keep for several weeks.

Tips & Tricks

Summer squashes thrive particularly well if you fertilize them regularly and ensure that they are watered evenly. However, you should avoid waterlogging at all costs, otherwise the plants will be susceptible to disease. Place them in a sunny location to promote the best growth. It is also advisable to regularly harvest smaller fruits so that the plant continues to produce fruit.

Cucurbita pepo, the summer squash, originally comes from Central America and has been cultivated for centuries. In addition to its bright color, the "orange" pumpkin is characterized by its mild, slightly sweet taste. It contains many important vitamins, such as vitamin A and C, as well as valuable minerals.
