The onion Allium cepa "Colorado de Figueras" is a traditional Spanish variety known for its sweet, mild flavor and reddish-purple skin. It is ideal for fresh consumption, salads and Mediterranean dishes. With these high-quality seeds, you can grow your own harvest and benefit from aromatic, storable onions.

Sowing instructions

Sowing takes place from February to April in protected cultivation or directly in the open field April to May. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, humus-rich soil.

1. Pre-culture:
   • Sow in seed trays or pots at approx. 15-20 °C.
   • Germination period: 10-20 days.
   • Young plants after approx. 6-8 weeks into the open ground.
2. Direct sowing:
   • Seed grooves with approx. 1-2 cm depth draw.
   • Scatter the seeds thinly and cover lightly with soil.
   • Row spacing: 25-30 cmPlant spacing: 10-15 cm.
   • Keep moist regularly, but avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

The harvest starts from July to Septemberas soon as the foliage wilts. Carefully pull the bulbs out of the soil and leave them to ripen in a dry, airy place.

• UseFresh in salads, steamed in soups and sauces or raw as a mild side dish.
• StorageAfter drying, store in a cool, dark place. Onions stored in a dry place will keep for several months.

✔ Observe crop rotationDo not plant bulbs in the same place every year to prevent diseases.
✔ Keep pests awayPlant carrots or marigolds nearby to deter bulb flies.
✔ Uniform irrigationToo much water can cause rotting, too little water inhibits growth.
✔ MulchingA thin layer of mulch helps to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds.

The "Colorado de Figueras" variety originates from Spain and is known for its large, mild tubers known. It is particularly popular in Catalan cuisine. Its high sugar content makes it ideal for Caramelized onions and sweet sauces.
