Mulungu (Erythrina Verna) seeds

Origin: Peru
Harvest: October 2019
Germination period: approx. 3-6 weeks

You can choose between Choose 10 and 20 seeds. Larger quantities on request please!

Growing instructions:

The germination of the seeds can be improved by soaking them in water or diluted gibberellic acid beforehand, although pre-soaking in water is normally sufficient. The seeds can also be carefully scarified with a file or similar to improve germination.

These seeds are dark sprouts, which is why they only need to be thinly covered with soil for germination.

Fill the seed pots with potting compost, spray with water, place the seeds on the soil (wings upright), cover with soil and spray with water. It is best to cover the seed pots with plastic film and air them daily or keep the soil moist, but not wet. Otherwise, the pots can also be placed in suitable propagators until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are a few centimetres tall. It is important to ensure a supply of fresh air at least once a day to prevent and avoid mold.

After germination of seeds seedlings can be slowly accustomed to the drier indoor air or fresh air outdoors after a few weeks.

We use high-quality plant soil with sufficient perlite, clay granules and/or volcanic stone granules for the plants.

Things to know about Mulungu:

Traditionally, mulungu is used for anxiety and stress and this has been confirmed by researchers in a recent study (2002) showing that it can alter anxiety-related responses. An animal model (correlating with generalized anxiety disorder in humans as well as panic disorder) was conducted on a water-alcohol extract of mulungu. The researchers reported that the mulungu extract had a similar effect to the commonly prescribed anti-anxiety drug, diazepam.

In this study, it was suggested that the alkaloids in Erythrina "may alter GABAergic neurotransmission". GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) functions primarily as a neurotransmitter in the brain. Abnormalities in its function are associated with diseases such as epilepsy, anxiety and depression. Further research has confirmed the traditional use of mulungu as an antimicrobial agent for throat and urinary tract infections. Mulungu showed antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and antifungal activity against Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium smegmatis in two studies.
