The seeds of Sanguisorba menziesiialso known as Menzies' meadow button, bring an unusual perennial to your garden. With its decorative, wine-red flowers and delicate, feathery leaves, this plant is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a valuable source of nectar for bees and butterflies.

Sowing instructions

The sowing of Sanguisorba menziesii requires a little patience, but with the right approach it can be done without any problems:

1. Cold germinatorThe seeds require a cold period for germination. Therefore a Stratification required.
2. Sowing timeSowing in the fall or spring is ideal.
3. Substrate & locationUse a well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and choose a sunny to semi-shady location.
4. Sowing methodCover the seeds lightly with soil (approx. 0.5 cm deep) and keep moist, but not wet.
5. Germination timeGermination can take several weeks to months - patience pays off!

Sanguisorba menziesii is not only an attractive ornamental plant, but also has many uses:

• Blossoms & leavesEdible and ideal for salads, herb butter or as decoration.
• Healing effectMeadow knapweed is traditionally valued for its astringent properties in naturopathy.
• Storing the seedsAfter the seeds are ripe (late summer to fall), you can collect the seeds, dry them and store them in a cool, dark place in an airtight container.

Tips and tricks

• To speed up germination, you can use the seeds for Stratify for 2-4 weeks in the refrigerator.
• The plant prefers fresh, well-drained soilsbut also thrives in slightly damp areas.
• Cut off faded flowers to promote a longer flowering period.
• Sanguisorba menziesii is hardyHowever, a light layer of mulch can be beneficial in winter.
