Viola odorata var. sulphurea ‘Irish Elegance’ is an exceptionally rare and elegant variant of the classic scented violet.
While most violets bloom purple or blue, this variety surprises with delicate, light yellow flowers and a fine, sweet fragrance.
Originally from Ireland, it was cultivated as an ornamental form in Victorian gardens at the beginning of the 20th century - a real collector's item for lovers of historic plants. 🌼✨
Sowing instructions 🌱
- Sowing time: February-April or August-September.
- Germination period: 2-4 weeks at 15-20 °C; cooler night temperatures promote germination.
- Seeding depth: 0.5 cm - Cover seeds lightly with soil.
- Substrate: Loose, humus-rich, moisture-regulating substrate.
- Location: Semi-shady to shady, best under shrubs or at the edge of trees.
- Pouring: Moisten evenly, do not allow to dry out.
- Planting distance: 15-20 cm, as plants spread by stolons.
💡 Note: After germination, place in a bright location and do not allow to dry out. Plants are hardy and long-lived.
Flowering, use & care 🌸
It flowers in early spring (March-April), often before many other garden flowers.
The light yellow, fragrant flowers are ideal for scented gardens, rock gardens or shady borders.
‘Irish Elegance’ is also a noble herald of spring in pots or balcony boxes.
After flowering, cut the plant back to promote compact growth.
