Strawberry corn (Zea Mays) seeds

Origin:Germany
Harvest: October 2023
Germination period: approx. 2-3 weeks

You can choose between 20 and 40 seeds. Larger quantities on request please!

Growing instructions:

These seeds are dark sprouts, which is why they need to be covered with soil if you want them to germinate.

The germination of the seeds can be improved by soaking them in water for 24-28 hours beforehand!

If the seeds are not planted directly outdoors, you should fill seed pots with potting compost, spray with water, place the seeds on the soil, cover with soil and spray with water. It is best to cover the seed pots with plastic film and air them daily or keep the soil moist. Otherwise, the pots can also be placed in suitable propagators until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are a few centimetres tall. It is important to ensure a supply of fresh air at least once a day to prevent and avoid mold.

Needs full sun outdoors, plenty of water and good fertilization!

After the seeds have germinated, the seedlings can be slowly acclimatized to drier indoor air or fresh air outdoors after a few weeks

The seeds can be germinated or pre-germinated indoors at the end of March/beginning of April. Outdoors, the plants reach a height of around 1.5m and produce several "cobs" per plant. Plant at a distance of approx. 20-30cm. The corn on the cob tastes very aromatic and is an eye-catcher 🙂

Interesting facts about corn:

Corn offers many health benefits due to the presence of high-quality nutrients. Apart from being a delicious addition to any meal, it is rich in phytochemicals and protects the human body against a number of chronic diseases.

Corn can protect against hemorrhoids. The fiber content of one cup of corn is 18.4% of the recommended daily amount. This helps relieve digestive problems/pain, such as constipation and hemorrhoids, as well as lowering the risk of colon cancer since corn is a whole grain.

A study by Dr. Arthur Schatzkin, former Chief of the Division of Nutritional Epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute (NCI), concludes: "Total dietary fiber intake is not associated with colorectal cancer risk, whereas whole grain consumption is associated with a slightly reduced amount." Fiber helps promote bowel movements, which stimulates peristaltic movement and the production of gastric juice and bile. It can also add bulk to excessively loose stools, which can reduce the chances of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diarrhea.

Corn promotes growth and is rich in vitamin B components, especially thiamine and niacin. Thiamine is essential for maintaining nerve health and cognitive function. Niacin deficiency leads to pellagra; a condition characterized by diarrhea, dementia and dermatitis, which can often be seen in malnourished individuals. Corn is also a good source of pantothenic acid, which is an essential vitamin for carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism in the body.

According to studies by Cornell University, corn is a rich source of antioxidants that fight cancer-causing free radicals. Unlike many other foods, cooking actually increases the number of usable antioxidants in sweet corn. It is a rich and abundant source of a phenolic compound called ferulic acid, a cancer-fighting agent that has been shown to be effective in combating tumors that lead to breast and liver cancer.

Anthocyanins, which are found in purple corn, for example, also act as free radical scavengers of cancer-causing free radicals. Antioxidants have been shown to reduce many of the dangerous forms of cancer by inducing apoptosis in cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unaffected. This is particularly relevant when phytochemicals are the source of the antioxidants, which is another type of compound that occurs in corn.
