Solanum aethiopicum "Nakati", also known as the Ethiopian eggplant or garden egg, is a popular leafy vegetable in Africa and Asia. The plant belongs to the nightshade family and is characterized by its strong, green leaves and high nutrient density. Nakati is ideal for growing in the garden or greenhouse and offers a rich harvest of aromatic leaves.
Sowing instructions
- Pre-cultureStart sowing from February to April in pots or seed trays at a temperature of 22-28 °C.
- GerminationThe seeds germinate after 7-14 days. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- PlantingAs soon as the seedlings are about 10 cm tall, you can plant them outdoors or in larger pots. A sunny, sheltered location with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil is ideal.
- Plant spacingKeep a distance of 40-50 cm between the plants so that they can develop optimally.
Harvest, use & storage
- HarvestThe leaves can be harvested continuously 6-8 weeks after planting. Cut them off carefully to encourage the growth of new leaves.
- UseNakati is a versatile culinary vegetable. The leaves taste slightly bitter and are often used in soups, stews or steamed as a side dish. They are rich in vitamins, iron and antioxidants.
- StorageFresh leaves will keep for a few days in the fridge. Alternatively, you can dry or freeze them to preserve them for longer.
Tips and tricks
✔ Regular cutting promotes growth and prevents the leaves from becoming too large and hard.
✔ Good irrigation is important, but waterlogging should be avoided.
✔ FertilizationA regular supply of organic fertilizer or compost ensures strong plants.
✔ Pest controlWatch out for aphids and caterpillars, which can appear occasionally. Natural remedies such as neem oil or soap suds help against infestation.
